Another good conditions, in general on all bands, another adventured weekend.
I started preparations in advance, my OM3500A tube started to lost it’s abilities… New one installed a week in advance. Starting period with new tube finished after 30s by powerful blow inside the case + breaker down. Two fuses burned out. I called to OM from OM Power. New fuses, brief checking of power supplies key measure points, all passed OK. Then normal start. Big thanks to Sandy, OM0WR.
Unfortunately, the second high bands tower works was still not finished, I decided not to push the pedal to the metal and instead concentrate on being properly ready for the contest.
Conditions were perfect, similar to last year, but I registered strange noise on high bands, NB cancelled it, but many signals at noise level. I was able to run few good pileups of cca 300 Q/h. Few of them NA but also pure EU, on 20m and 40m, so it decrease averages and total points and also decreased the time for S/P mults… Working on R2 was difficult. More and more stations count on the fact, that callers are of Assisted category and knew the callsign from the cluster. So obtaining the callsign info was sometimes not easy job, especially in the case of rare mults pileups.
Finding the run frequency was a small IQ test, especially on 40m and 20m – after closing of 10m and 15m. And the next challenge while trying to hold the frequency…
More and more guys are reducing calling CQ to just only calling of their callsigns. Neither „CQ“, nor „contest“. There was not clear if they called somebody (and I did not hear him) or called CQ. The same reduction applied to exchange: „15“ instead of „59 15“.
So, my CQ WW SSB max score was not broken, but pileups preference brought my personal max QSO number.
I hope in holding better tactic rules during CW leg to maximize score, especially band changing and mults S/P strategy.
Thanks to every participant, from big fishes to all those small pistols.
